Convalescent homes were nursing facilities for people with tuberculosis and similar diseases. Before the discovery of antibiotics, the only treatment available was rest and clean air. Since most of the patients had contracted their condition in the polluted air of industrial towns, the preferred location for convalescent homes was at the seaside or in the mountains.
