The Contemporary style in residential architecture in the United States is defined by features such as low-pitched (sometimes flat) roofs with widely overhanging eaves; exposed roof beams; windows in gable ends or (in non-gabled facades) just below roof line; natural materials (wood, stone, brick); broad expanse of uninterrupted wall surface on front facade; recessed or obscured entry door; asymmetrical floor plan. This style was most common between 1945 and 1990.
