Common lands are areas which are part of more than one civil parish. Although such areas exist in the south of England, they are perhaps more associated with the north of the country. It is a technical term used in local government legislation and for statistical purposes, and can cover a relatively large geographic area. Fylingdales Moor in North Yorkshire is probably one of the best known. This is entirely different from common land, usually referred to as commons, which is an area of land where "commoners" have certain rights to graze cattle, or harvest products, although these days it tends to mean an area where the public have a right to use the land for recreational activities.
