English: The Collins Block, SE corner of Second Avenue and James Street in downtown Seattle. It was built in 1893 by John Collins on the former site of his original house, with the primary goal of housing the dry goods store of his son-in-law, James Baillargeon, known then as the Lace House. In an unusual move, excavation began and a contractor, James Parke, was hired before an architect was even selected - Collins eventually chose the plans of Arthur Bishop Chamberlain, who is known for little else locally. Upper floors contained office space and several large meeting halls, including an early location of the Seattle Public Library.
