w:Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent (d.1360) was the son of Robert Holland, 1st Baron Holland of Upholland, Lancashire. He married Joan Plantagenet, "The Fair Maid of Kent", a daughter and eventual sole heiress of Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent (6th son of King Edward I and his second wife Marguerite of France and thus a younger half-brother of King Edward II). Joan's eldest son Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent, bore the arms of Edmund of Woodstock, and her younger son John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter, 1st Earl of Huntingdon, a differenced version. By her second marriage Joan Plantagenet was the mother of King Richard II, who was thus a uterine half-brother of her elder Holland sons.
