The "Roses of Guelders" originate from the Wichard Saga. Leopold and Wichard, the sons of Sir Otto, heard there was a dragon which was ravaging the local area. They hunted the dragon and found it under an old medlar bush. The dragon roared at them: “Gelre, Gelre,” and was slain by Wichard. At that place the brothers founded a stronghold which they called “Gelre”. Leopold died childless and was succeeded by his younger brother Wichard, who married Lady Margaret of Hameland.
