Basic arms & blazon

[edit]

The quarterings emphasise his descent (via a female line) from w:Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence (1338–1368), the second surviving son of King Edward III, rather than from his more junior ancestor in the male line, Lionel's younger brother, namely Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York, the 4th surviving son of King Edward III. It was due to this descent from Lionel, Duke of Clarence, that the House of York claimed seniority to the kings from the House of Lancaster, descended from John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the third surviving son of King Edward III, and was the basis for the Wars of the Roses. Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence, married w:Elizabeth de Burgh, 4th Countess of Ulster and their daughter Philippa de Burgh married w:Edmund Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March, whose son w:Roger de Mortimer, 4th Earl of March, was the great-grandfather of King Edward IV, the eldest son of w:Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York
