He worked in the shop of Johann Stauffer in Vienna, and eventually rose to become foreman of the latter's atelier. Restrictive German guild regulations led Martin to emigrate, and on September 9, 1833, he left for New York, where he established a music store and continued his trade as a musical instrument maker. On May 29, 1839, Martin sold his stock to music dealers Ludecus & Wolter, 320 Broadway, and moved to Nazareth, Pennsylvania to join other members of the Moravian community. ",
" Martin's fame and contributions to American guitar making are too great to be adequately dealt with by this study, (see Longworth 1975), however, it should be mentioned that trough Martin left the city in 1939, he continued to print “New York” on his labels until 1898—possibly because most of his instruments were sold through New York distributors. Instruments made by Martin during his residence in the city tend to have paper labels. ",
" Martin was involved in several partnerships during his stay in the city. The first of these was with Henry Schatz, a violin maker Martin had known in Saxony. Their firm, Martin & Schatz, made violins at 196 Hudson Street in 1835. From 1845-51, Schatz worked as an instrument maker in Boston, (see Ayars 1936:277,230), before settling in Nazareth and going to work for Martin's Pennsylvania factory. ",
" From 1838-39, Martin and a partner named Bruno—almost certainly the instrument dealer Charles Bruno who had arrived from Germany in 1834—headed the firm Martin & Bruno. And later, from 1840-41, Martin established Martin & Coupa, in partnership with John Coupa, a well-known guitar teacher with studios at 385 Broadway. It is unlikely that Coupa was actually involved with the construction of instruments; it is more probable that Coupa's studios served primarily as a retail outlet for Martin's guitars, since that maker had already left the city by 1840. Years later, the instrument dealers Zoebisch & Sons—a firm whose members apparently came from and belonged to the Nazareth Moravian community—served as Martin's distributors in New York. The maker's Pennsylvania shop is still in operation. "- Groce 1991, MARTIN & BRUNO p.105. "1838-39 mus instrs 212 Fulton / See Cristian Frederick Martin. "
