Chitarrone is a theorbo-ized bass chitarra italiana, adopted with a neck extension to accommodate open (i. e. unfretted) bass strings. Although theorbo and chitarrone are virtually identical, they have different etymological origins, chitarrone being a descendant of chitarra italiana (hence its name).
