The Chief of the National Guard Bureau Biathlon Championships is the name of a biathlon competition between National Guard units held by the National Guard Bureau. The competition had been created by the United States Army as a training device for winter warfare as it was known in the Scandinavian countries. In 1973, the active Army turned over the biathlon mission to the Vermont Army National Guard, which serves a mountainous state. The first "Chief of the National Guard Bureau (CNGB) Biathlon Championships" were held in 1975. The competition is held at Camp Ripley (Minnesota) and Camp Ethan Allen Training Site (Vermont). Meanwhile, the biathlon has become an event of the Olympic Games. The Bureau is the only Defense Department organization to send competitors to the Olympics. Any soldier in good standing may apply for admission to the program.
