The Charlottenborg Exhibitions of art have been taking place in spring at Charlottenborg, Copenhagen since 1769, as the Danish counterpart to the Parisian Salon, and formally date back to at least 1857, when the Charlottenborg Committee, later the Charlottenborg Foundation, was entrusted with the annual Spring Exhibition. Since 1900, the Foundation has also been in charge of the Autumn Exhibition. In 1928, the Foundation was formally established as an independent institution.
