'Charles Toft', Mapping the Practice and Profession of Sculpture in Britain and Ireland 1851-1951, University of Glasgow History of Art and HATII, online database 2011 accessed 10 Nov 2018 "Born 1832 Died 1 May 1909, Active: 1851 - 1891, Modeller, teacher of modelling. Born in Hanley, Staffordshire (Stoke-on-Trent). He was the son of Alphonsus Toft (born c.1801), an engraver. Charles was a modeller for Mintons in the 1850s and then studied at Stoke Art School 1860-64. He taught modelling at Birmingham School of Art between about 1868-73 (possibly starting earlier, based on the birthplace of his children in the mid-1860s). Toft was appointed chief modeller at Wedgwood's from 1877 to 1888." Self-portrait in the Potteries Museum. - But there is talk of two Charles Tofts.
