English: Charles S. Raleigh (1830-1925), also known as Charles Sidney Raleigh and C. S. Raleigh, was born in Gloucester, England, and when he was ten years old ran away to sea joining his uncle who commanded a British naval vessel. For thirty years he was a merchant seaman, then he settled in Massachusetts. He started as a house and sign painter, then progressed to a self-taught maritime and marine artist. He created nearly eleven hundred paintings including six hundred images of whaling vessels.
