English: This obelisk is a cenotaph, not a grave nor tomb. It is known popularly as Cenotafio de los Tres Amigos and commemorates the lives of three close friends who died within a year of each other: Alberto Navarro Viola Susviela (1858-1885), Adolfo Emiliano Mauricio Mitre y Vedia (1859-1884) and Benigno Baldomero Lugones Dorrego (1857-1884).[1] Portraits of each of the men, along with symbols of their lives, are found on the sides of the triangular pyramid, near the base. These were executed by sculptor Augusto Felice. A bronze Angel sits at the top holding aloft a wreath.[2]
