Note: Several exotic Celtis species have been introduced to urban areas of (southern) Africa, and are easily confused with Celtis africana. Nurseries also sell trees as C. africana, which are in fact other species that grow faster in city environments. If the upper surface of the leaf is smooth or reflective, it is not C. africana, which has dull velvety leaves. If the leaves do not discolor from the edges in autumn, but turn uniformly yellow, it is not C. africana. If the fruit turns red or black when mature, it is not C. africana.
