Cats (Feliformia) are a diverse group of mammals belonging to the order of carnivores (Carnivora). They are distinguished by their characteristic anatomy and behaviour. The best-known representatives include big cats such as lions, tigers, leopards and cheetahs, but also small cats such as domestic cats, ocelots and servals. Cats share some common characteristics that distinguish them from other predators. These include a slender, graceful build, sharp claws and fangs, and excellent hearing and eyesight that help them hunt for prey. Many felines are solitary and territorial, defending their territory against conspecifics and other animals. They are primarily carnivorous and have specialised dental and digestive adaptations to cope with their high protein diet. Some cat species are highly endangered, mainly due to habitat loss and poaching. The protection and conservation of these fascinating animals is of great importance to maintain their populations and preserve the ecological balance in their habitats. |
