Cabinet portrait — a portrait of person in their study, office, or private library (a private room previously called a "cabinet"). Interior plays important role.
- The person is usually sitting at a table, writing or with papers, a book, or some instrument in hand.
- The iconography of these portraits reflects the main capacity of the model as a scholar, politician, or scientist.
- Should not be confused with late 19th and 20th century portrait photographs called Cabinet cards, which refers to the physical properties of the photograph, not its subject contents.
