Arms of Burgundy (ancient): Bendy of six or and azure, a bordure gules (arms of the first House of the Duchy of Burgundy)
The first w:House of Burgundy was a cadet branch of the w:Capetian dynasty, descending from w:Robert I, Duke of Burgundy, a younger son of King Robert II of France. The House ruled the Duchy of Burgundy from 1032 to 1361, when w:Philip I, Duke of Burgundy died childless and the Duchy reverted to King John II of France (of the House of Valois), who created his son w:Philip the Bold as the new Duke of Burgundy, thus beginning the w:House of Valois-Burgundy, or the Second House of Burgundy / Younger House of Burgundy. Philip the Bold's arms were his father's arms (royal arms of France) differenced by a bordure gobonny argent and gules, which became known as Bergundy (modern), and upon being created Duke of Bergundy he quartered the arms of Bergundy (ancient))
