The Burgstall Holenstein is the emplacement of an ancient castle next to the hamlet Holenstein of the community Bühlerzell. It's about 100 m South to the last barn of the hamlet at an altitude of about 440 m. It's situated left to the creek Reutenbach in its little dell. The creek passes it just a few steps to the Northeast side and is reached from the castle side first by a small, yet steep gully from the South having only water after rainfall and a bit later from the much longer dell of a small, but rather permanent affluent.

Between these terrain depressions stands the relict hill of the ancient castle on a shallow Northern oriented lateral ridge of the Anzenberg mountain in the South. This relict hill has a width (on the top) of about 3–5 m, a length of about 20 m (on the top), has at the Northern end a height of 5–7 m above the creek, ascends on top about 1–2 m until its Southern end, where an embrasure of about 2 m depth separates it from the more steep part (ca. 30%) of the ridge, which goes on with this inclination until it reaches the level of a rather plain part of the Anzenberg mountain some 50–70 m further to the South and some 30 m higher; the rest of the inclination up to the topmost point of the Anzenberg mountain at an altitude of nearly 490 m some 300 m more to the South is rather smooth.
