Brougham Terrace was built in the 1830s as a terrace of twelve houses. Nos. 5 to 8 were originally the offices of the West Derby Union, later expanded to include nos 1 to 4. In 1908 nos. 1 to 7 were replaced by a new building, used as local government offices. Nos. 8 to 10 became the premises of the Liverpool Muslim Institute, founded by William Henry Quilliam (aka Abdullah Quilliam), and were originally listed at Grade II by English Heritage; no. 8 has since been upgraded to a II* listing due to its historic significance as "England's first fully-functioning mosque". Quilliam also purchased nos. 11 & 12, which were used as a school and an orphanage; both have since been demolished and replaced by a two-storey brick building currently occupied by a music shop.
