Deutsch: Die Straße ist nach dem „Brand“ benannt, einem Gebiet südlich der Calenberger Straße, das trotz der Anlage des Befestigungsgrabens feucht und hochwassergefährdet blieb. Die Brandstraße war hier 1698 aus dem Gebiet ausgestochen und zunächst „Auf dem Brande“ benannt. Ab 1750 hieß sie „Zweite Brandstraße“ und ab 1818 „Große Brandstraße“. Erst 1860 erhielt sie ihren heutigen Namen. Auffällig die Namensähnlichkeit mit Brand Westermann, der unter der (heutigen) Hausnummer 24 seinen Wohnsitz hatte.
