English: Jean-Pierre Blanchard's ascension in a hot air balloon from the Walnut Street Prison yard in Philadelphia across the Delaware River to Deptford Township, New Jersey, January 9, 1793. This was the first balloon flight in North America. The ascension was observed in Philadelphia by many notable people, including United States President George Washington, from the adjacent Southwest Square (now Washington Square).
