Birger Ljungström (1872–1948) was a Swedish engineer, inventor and industrialist. Together with his younger brother Fredrik Ljungström (1875-1964), they invented the Ljungström the double steam turbine to drive large three-phase electric generators, and founded the company STAL in Finspång, Sweden. In 1918 they designed steam turbine engines to drive large locomotives that could replace the older design of steam piston engines.
