Besease (also: Bisease) is a village in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipal District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana. This location in the traditional Kwahu region is known as birth place of Yaa Asantewaa, a famous local female folk hero, which organised and led a guerrilla war against the British in 1900/1901 known as Fifth Anglo-Ashanti War (also called "War of the Golden Stool"). The grange with her birth house and a traditional shrine for the local Akan gods escaped the destruction by the British after the banishment of Yaa Asantewaa to the Seychelles and is today (2016) as “Besease shrine” a place of the UNESCO World Heritage.
The etymology of the location name indicates to “Bese” (= the native name for a “Cola nut tree” = a plant of the species Cola nitida) and the suffix "-ase" means "under" in the Twi-language, so that the location name can be translated with "Under the cola tree".
