Beaches of Islay in the Scottish Gaelic vocabulary of coastal topography are always designated by tràigh, which always means only the beach, never the bay, or rocky coast. A shingle beach may be designated, but most are sandy. On Islay, the most visited beaches are usually known by an English name. In English, the name of the bay, inlet, or geographical location is sometimes used for the beach. This practice extends to the Gaelic in a few cases by back-formation.
