English: The Battle of Cloyd's Mountain was fought on May 9, 1864, during the American Civil War. The fight took place in southwestern Virginia in Pulaski County, about five miles north of the Dublin Depot of the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad. This railroad was a target of the Union Army because it was used to transport troops and supplies. Targets included the Dublin Depot (also a regional Confederate army headquarters), a major railroad bridge across the New River, and the track infrastructure. The Union Army, led by Brigadier General George Crook, was intercepted north of the depot by Confederate forces led by Brigadier General Albert Jenkins. The Confederate Army was defeated and fled east. The Union Army burned the Dublin Depot, about four miles of railroad line, and the New River Bridge. Because the bridge's stone pylons were not demolished, the railroad infrastructure was rebuilt in about one month.
