English: The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was first designated BT2D Dauntless II. In February 1946, the name was changed to Skyraider and in April 1946 the aircraft was re-designated AD with the U.S. Navy (and with it U.S. Marine Corps). This designation lasted until 18 September 1962 when, with the introduction of the Tri-Service aircraft designation system, all Skyraiders still in service were redesignated A-1. The models AD-1 to AD-3 were not in service anymore and therefore received no new designation. The AD-4 was not in service anymore, but was redesignated A-1D for foreign military sales.
Therefore, the few XBT2D-1 produced were redesignated XAD-1. The aircraft were the same.
