Before the North American railway grid reached Northern Alberta cargo intended for the Mackenzie River system was brought west on the Saskatchewan River, and then hauled overland to a tributary of the Mackenzie. The Widely used Athabasca Trail connected Edmonton with the Athabasca River, at an outpost that came to be known as Athabasca Landing. The trail fell out of use when a railway was built to Fort McMurray.
