Arles (Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence, France), interior of the Notre-Dame-la-Major church, as soon as you enter in the south aisle, admirable old high altar from the 17th century, in painted and gilded wood, from the former conventual church of Saint-Blasius in the Saint-Césaire enclosure ; the first four photos taken in 2013 show the condition before restoration, the following ones, taken from 2022, bear witness to the recent restoration ; on this occasion, the altar was renamed altar of the Gardians, the Major church being the parish of the Confrérie (Brotherhood) of the Gardians of Saint George. The painting of the altarpiece is not the original one which was rectangular, as can be seen in one of the photos taken before the restoration, and some gilded bas-reliefs were mutilated to allow the insertion of a frame in the rounded top rail ; the painting represents the Virgin and the Child surrounded by Saint Blasius in the dress of a bishop and Saint John, it is signed and dated at the bottom right : J.Carpenel 1742. Jacques Carpenel was a Provencal painter born in Puget-sur-Argens in 1699, having married and settled in 1726 in Aix-en-Provence where he died in 1769. We know of him, for the moment, only this painting and some decorative paintings in private mansions in the city of Aix.
