English: The Ottoman fortress in Aptera (Crete) is located on a hilltop near the ruins of Byzantine Aptera, high above the entrance to Souda Bay. In 1867 (during the Cretan Revolution), in the framework of a program to control Crete from a network of towers, the fortress was constructed by Hussein Avni Pasha, the Turkish governor of Crete.
