English: "Antichthones" (also called "Antipodes") were people, animals and monsters that supposedly lived on the other side of the earth, with strange characteristics due to the completely different environment there (where up is down, or where conditions are too hot). Illustrations of Antichthones were produced in Europe, often based on ancient myths and stories, until exploration revealed the truth.
