Armoured statue of Emperor Trajan, a huge statue (2,30 m.) from Perge, 2nd and 3rd century AD (on either side headless emperors). Found in Perge in 1992 in front of the stage of the Theatre, in many pieces and with a lot missing. The base has been renewed. It shows an aging emperor in a military cuirass, or breast plate, with a long paludamentum (military cloak) folded and draped over his left shoulder and arm. He probably held a sword or scepter in his raised right hand. A horn of plenty in relief is sculpted on the supporting tree trunk to his right. A naked figure in the centre of his breast plate holds two griffons by the horns. The head, dating from the second century, has been recarved to suit the style of the 3rd century, a habit becoming more common at the end of that century. From the booklet I understand this re-used head was put on a freshly sculpted body at that time, when the stage-building was being rearranged.
