English: ‘Alphabet’ or ‘Letter’ pens were introduced by Birmingham manufacturer William Mitchell in 1843. They feature a large-sized, embossed letter to easily identify the different types of nibs. Some — such as the J pen — became extremely popular and were reproduced by many other pen manufacturers. G pens are still produced, mainly for the Japanese market.
