The Allentown Hilton hotel was built by an investment group headed by Phillip Berman at 904 Hamilton Street (Mall). The hotel at the time was hoped to be a spur for redevelopment of the "downtown" Hamilton Street business district, and was partially funded by Allentown Redevelopment Authority (ARA) funds.

Planning for the hotel began in 1977, which replaced the Old Allentown Library (which had moved in 1976, building yorn down); the Martin House (raised 1959) and New York Floral Shop, which was torn down. The 225-room hotel opened in August 1981. The New York Floral Company operated inside the hotel for several years in a leased facility.

The hotel was sold to Starwood Hotels & Resorts, February 1996, and underwent a $2 million dollar renovation in 1997 and 1998. In August 2001, the hotel lost its Hilton affiliation, and was renamed as the Allentown Clairon.

In 2003, the affiliation with Clarion expired. The hotel was again renovated with new wallpaper and fabrics and furniture. The lobby carpet was replaced with a marble tile. In January 2004, the hotel was purchased by the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHC), and was renamed as the Crowne Plaza, part of the Holiday Inn brand. IHC later renamed it the Holiday Inn Allentown in October 2007. The property was sold in December 2017 to city Center Development, which closed the property on December 27th, 2017.

Presently the property is being converted into a 120-unit apartment buildng known as Cityplace. Cityplace will be the company’s tallest residential building. An addition to the building’s south side will contain 78 additional apartments surrounding a courtyard with an outdoor pool and firepits. Cityplace will offer studio, one-bedroom and two apartments.
