The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, also known as the Banjul Charter, is an international human rights instrument of the African Union that is intended to promote and protect human rights and basic freedoms in the African continent. It was adopted in June 1981 and went into effect on 21 October 1986. In 2003, the Maputo Protocol was added to it to establish and clarify the rights of women in Africa.
