Adrift (1907) by John Cassidy was gifted to the City of Manchester by the industrialist and art collector James Gresham. Originally it stood as the centrepiece of Piccadilly Gardens, until it was moved to the western side of the gardens in 1953 to be replaced by the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Fountain. When Piccadilly Gardens were modernised in 2003, Adrift was relocated to St Peter's Square, outside the Town Hall Extension. In 2009, it was moved again to its present location outside the Manchester Central Library, next to St. Peter's Square.
