English: Acme Supermarkets are a supermarket chain, a division of Albertsons corporation. The Acme division is headquartered in Philadelphia. The chain's last Allentown store closed in 1999.

The chain first established itself in Allentown as the "Acme Tea Company" in September 1914. The company opened four stores in the city, selling tea, coffee and groceries at Fifth and Turner Streets, Seventh and Liberty streets, Ridge Avenue and Sycamore Street and Madison and Chew Streets. By May 1917, the chain had expanded to nine stores in the city when it was purchased by the American Stores Company, based in Philadelphia. "American Stores", as the chain renamed itself, expanded in the city and area into the 1930s.

A new store opened in December 1937 at Fifth and Hamilton Street, an "Acme Supermarket", which customers waited on themselves and by December 1941, three Acme Supermarkets had opened in Allentown. During the 1940s, both Acme Supermarkets as well as American Store grocery stores operated in the city. About 1950, the company, still known as the American Stores Company, began to phase out its grocery stores and concentrate on supermarkets. The last American Store grocery closed in 1952.

Acme supermarkets thrived in Allentown, as well as the suburbs, establishing new stores in the townships surrounding the city as well as acquiring and building new supermarkets in Allentown. Acme acquired many former A&P stores in Allentown as A&P's financial fortunes declined in the 1980s.

American Stores Company was sold in 1979 to the Skaggs Companies which took the American Stores name, moving its headquarters to Salt Lake City. In 1995, Acme Supermarkets began to close in northeastern Pennsylvania, and the local Acmes in the Allentown area also began to close. In 1999, American Stores was was acquired by major Western and Southern chain Albertsons, which refocused its stores in eastern Pennsylvania on the Philadelphia area. The last Acme Supermarket in Allentown closed in December 1999.
