Following the Restoration of Portuguese Independence in 1640, King John IV of Portugal consecrated the Crown of Portugal to the Virgin Mary, proclaiming her to be the Queen and patroness of his nation. After this act, no Portuguese sovereign ever wore a crown, and coronations were replaced by a ceremony of Acclamation (Aclamação).
