Abercromby Place is a street in the New Town of Edinburgh and was part of the first extension of the New Town. Buildings were started in 1806 and the street was complete by 1819. William Playfair, one of Scotland's greatest architects, lived at (first) 17 Abercromby Place. Playfair is credited with turning Edinburgh into the "Athens of the North."
