Allen J. Reichard was born in Allentown on 30 October 1852. He was educated in the public schools of Allentown and at the age of 14 began to learn the wallpaper business as an apprentice of William F. Wolfe. He first served in the Pennsylvania Milita, enlisting in Company D, Fourth Regiment in September 1871. He rose through the ranks an was appointed Captain on 27 June 1884. In 1884 he left the militia and started the A. J. Reichard Wallpaper company, first from 438 Chew Street, then later from 1890 onward from the 245 North Seventh Street, which he operated until leaving the business due to ill health in January 1917. Mr Reichard died at the Hotel Melson in Jacksonville, Florida on 7 January 1918.
