On 1 December 2013, a series of riots occurred in Downtown Kyiv in response to a police crackdown on Euromaidan's protesters on Maidan Nezalezhnosti on the night of November the 30th. Тhe rioting started after participants of the rally at St. Michael's Square re-took the nearby Maidan Nezalezhnosti and then marched to the Presidential Administration of Ukraine at Bankova Street and to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine at Hrushevskoho Street. After clashes with police, protesters returned to Maidan Nezalezhnosti and occupied the Kyiv City Council (City Hall) and the Trade Unions' Building on Khreshchatyk street. They also tried to topple the statue of Lenin at the Bessarabska Square.
