  2. On a chief of the fourth a rose Gules barbed and seeded Proper.
  • Crest: On a wreath of the colors Or and Azure, a demi-disc Gules charged with the setting sun with twelve light rays Or (the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 41st Division), behind a beaver sejant Proper.
  • Motto: CUSTODES PORTAE OCCIDENTIS (Guards of the Western Gate).

Symbolism

  • Shield:
  1. The rose is the general flower of the Northwest.
  2. The two arms interlocked are indicative of military strength, ready to strike at an enemy who endeavors to enter the United States through the “Western Gate” (represented by the gateway in the tower).
  3. They further allude to the fact that the parent organization, the 186th Infantry Regiment, had elements in both Idaho and Oregon.
  • Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Oregon Army National Guard.

  2. It was amended by addition of the word “giant” in the blazonry of the shield on 1964-06-29.

  • Shield:
  1. A Gold color metal and enamel device 1⅛ inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, a fess Gules fimbriated Or between in chief a fasces and in base a giant cactus, both of the last.
  2. Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Blue scroll inscribed “FIRST TO ASSEMBLE” in Gold letters.

  1. The shield is blue for Infantry, the red fess with the gold edges gives the Spanish colors and the red fess and the blue shield give the colors of the Philippine service ribbon.
  2. The cactus indicates the Mexican Border service and the fasces from the arms of the French Republic indicates service in France.

  1. The flag has a solid background with an embroidered American eagle displayed centered thereon, in Proper Colors.
  2. In its right talon the eagle holds an olive branch; in its left talon, a bundle of 13 arrows, all in proper colors.
  3. Its beak grasps a scroll inscribed with the unit motto.
  4. Below the eagle is a scroll inscribed with the designation of the organization.
  5. On the eagle’s breast is embroidered the shield of the coat of arms and the State Crest is above the eagle’s head.
  6. When a unit is allocated to two or more States, the Crests will be displayed in the order of the entry of each State in the Union.
