The 139th Fighter Squadron is a historic phase of the 139th Airlift Squadron, which originally had a fighter mission. It was constituted in 1948 from the 303d Fighter Squadron of the New York Air National Guard based at Schenectady County Airport. In 1960 when its mission was changed from fighter to transport it became the 139th Air Transport Squadron, the central unit of the 109th Air Transport Group. In 1966 it became the 137th Military Airlift Squadron, and in 1971 the 139th Tactical Airlift Squadron. The current name was acquired in 1995.
