The 11th Wing was first organized in 1940 as the 11th Bombardment Group stationed at Andrews Field. After the creation of the United States Air Force from most of the units of the Army Air Force, a branch of the United States Army, it was rolled into Andrews Air Force Base, but Andrews Field also housed the Naval Air Facility Washington of the United States Navy, which contained units that performed many functions utilized by the Federal Government in Washington, D.C. In 2009 the two units were merged into Joint Base Andrews, represented by the commons category, "Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility." In 2010 the 11th Wing at Bolling Air Force Base, shortly to become Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, moved to Joint Base Andrews, where it merged with the 316th Wing. The merged unit kept the name, 11th Wing.
