The original description state that the parentage is Disocactus ackermannii × Nopalxochia phyllanthoides × Epiphyllum crenatum, but the decription of D. ackermannii in the text outrule that species. It is likely that the plant in was × Disochia jenkinsonii (N. phyllanthoides × D. speciosus), commonly cultivated under the name "Ackermannii". The original drawing File:× Disophyllum splendens 'Splendens'.jpg show a plant with both triangular stems and basal spination, supporting this.
