Dagon or Dagan was the Semitic god of cereal (dagan in Hebrew) and agriculture, lord of the land. The similarity between his name and the Hebrew word דג (dag, meaning fish) created a tradition from the medieval age of an incorrect interpretation of Dagan as a fish god. See: Singer, Itamar (1992). "Towards the image of Dagon, the god of the Philistines". Syria. 69 (3): 433.
