  • Box no. - The box No. For Royal Mail boxes, they are numbered with the first part of their actual postcode, followed by an identifying number. The Isle of Man Post Office box was numbered 32, while the Guernsey Post box on the isle of Sark is simply numbered "Sark".
  • A - Recipient class, denoting boxes painted for individual Olympic athletes (O), individual Paralympic athletes (O), for groups, teams or places (X), and the two boxes painted to launch the Olympic and Paralympic phases of the scheme (L).
  • T - Box Type:
  1. A/B - Type A/B pillar box, the classic cylindrical single aperture box
  2. C - Type C, the double-aperture oval shaped pillar box

  • k - Nicola Adams ultimately received 2 individual gold boxes on the same site in Leeds to commemorate 1 gold medal, a Type C box for ordinary post (LS1 424), and the franked mail deposit box alongside it (LS2 1051).
  • n - As quadruple gold medallists, both Sarah Storey and David Weir ultimately received 4 individual gold boxes on 4 different sites to commemorate their medals. David's boxes are located in and around Wallington in London, with three in very close proximity in the Roundshaw estate. Sarah's 4 boxes by contrast are distributed in 3 different towns and 1 village in north west England.
  • o - Greg Rutherford received a pair of Type K boxes (MK9 334 and MK9 521) standing next to each other on the same site, to commemorate a single gold medal.
  • p - Wimslow, Cheshire, based cyclist Craig MacLean initially received 1 gold box (PH26 58) in Grantown-on-Spey, Scotland, to commemorate his single gold medal won as an able-bodied pilot in the Paralympics, while fellow Wimslow resident and Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton also initially received 1 gold box (SG5 111) in Stotfold, Bedfordshire, to commemorate her single gold medal. A third box (SK9 6) was later painted in their home town Wimslow, dedicated to both of them.
  • r - Sophie Christiansen ultimately received 4 individual gold boxes in 4 separate sites to commemorate 3 gold medals.
