Subtitle tool?

[edit]

Hei hei! Manually assigning initial subtitles is painfully tedious. 😥 Translating them is fine, as the times are already established. Are there any useful tools or ways that will make adding subtitles easier and/or faster? I couldn't really see anything of the sort on the subtitle information page, though maybe I simply didn't look closely enough! EdoAug (talk) 01:41, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I don't know. I use the tools on YouTube when I crosspost it there --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 11:21, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PantheraLeo1359531: Interesting! Do you post it onto YouTube first, add subtitles through YouTube, and then import to Commons? EdoAug (talk) 13:32, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Usually, yes. It depends on my workflow, where I publish it first, but the advantage is that YouTube has speak recognition and adds a (not perfect) transcription with rather accurate timestamps, so you only have to do smaller changes. Once published (video and subtitle), you can download the subtitle with online or offline software :) --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 14:17, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Image I have rights to use got deleted

[edit]

I uploaded an image that I have rights to use online. I uploaded the original, unedited version of the image. It got deleted because an administrator cited a news source that has an edited version of the image on it (the same source who released the image rights for my use). What steps should I take if I want to re-upload this image to make it clear to others that I have rights to use it so that they cannot just delete it? EAWDA (talk) 02:42, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@EAWDA: I assume from context here that you are talking about a copyrighted image, where someone else holds the copyright. (You don't say just what image you are talking about, but I presume this is File:Genlin.jpg. When you uploaded that, you claimed it was your own work, which certainly did not help in sorting this out.) You personally having rights to "use the image online" is not enough for Commons. Commons only hosts copyrighted images if they offer a specific free license such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} that allows anyone to reuse the image, even commercially (e.g. in a newspaper, a published book for sale, or even printed as a poster) and to make derivative works. That license must come from the copyright-holder, who is usually the photographer.
There are two ways the copyright-holder can provide that permission:
  1. On a publicly visible web page that is clearly under their control, they can indicate the license for the image. This can be their personal web site, a publicly visible social media post, etc. Then anyone (including you) can link that page as the source and upload the image.
  2. They can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT, in which they send a confidential email offering the license. They can identify the image as "Genlin.jpg", the team at VRT will know what that means. Once correct permission is received and processed (which may take weeks), the file will be undeleted. Might take a little longer if the email is in Chinese, but there are people on the team who can read that. (And, of course, once undeleted, the authorship should be corrected.)
Do please read COM:VRT, which explains how you can do this in the future without getting the picture deleted along the way. Jmabel ! talk 03:05, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Jmabel Your pointers are very clear, which bring me to think that it may be easier for me to upload other images that I have exclusive rights to, and those that have not been published elsewhere. In that case the image would not need to undergo the processes you pointed out.
Another related question if you may enlighten me. Am I in fact uploading images at the wrong place? I'm referring to images being usable on a Wiki page, which is my ultimate purpose. That does not require it to be a commons image, or am I wrong? EAWDA (talk) 03:38, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@EAWDA: If you are not the photographer, you would need to demonstrate why you have "exclusive rights". You'd need to go through COM:VRT yourself to establish with them the basis on which you own exclusive rights to photos you did not take. (The correspondence would be confidential; VRT is a small team of highly trusted, experienced volunteers.)
Yes, Commons is generally the best place to upload images for Wikipedia. Any image on Commons can readily be used on Wikipedia in any language; if you upload directly to a Wikipedia in a particular language, only that Wikipedia can use the image. Some of the Wikipedias (including English) have a limited ability to host certain images that are not "free enough" for Commons and are needed in their articles, but that allowance is usually quite limited (e.g. the English-language Wikipedia generally will not host images of living people on that basis). - Jmabel ! talk 04:19, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel Understood, and based on what you said it would appear to me that only a photographer of an image can effect the licenses of it for it to be usable on Wiki Commons. That bar seems to have been set incredibly high as it disregards commercially "sold" usage rights of an image. An example would be that if John Doe commissions a photographer to take portraits of John, and released all the rights of usage exclusively to John, John or his associates would still not be permissible to upload an image of him on Wiki Commons without it being taken down. I am quite new to Wiki so I may be stating the obvious here.
Also, I've done all the required steps to qualify as auto-confirmed user (over 4 days registration plus having done over 10 edits) but am still pending that status. I am trying to figure out why that is and I do see they have different requirements for different language Wikipedia, for example I remember seeing the Chinese Wikipedia page requiring users to be registered for over 5 days and done over 50 edits or something. I wonder if it is because when I registered I was on Wikipedia's Chinese page (even though all the info I filled in was in English) and that I was assigned to follow the Chinese Wikipedia requirements? EAWDA (talk) 08:22, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your Commons account was created on 1 July. That’s the time you first visited Commons while logged in. The “confirmation period” started that day. --Geohakkeri (talk) 08:38, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Geohakkeri Sorry I was referring to my Wikipedia account. EAWDA (talk) 08:47, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@EAWDA: Each language's Wikipedia is a separate project. As you can see at Special:CentralAuth/EAWDA, you have only made two edits to English Wikipedia, so you aren't yet autoconfirmed on English Wikipedia. --bjh21 (talk) 09:38, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"disregards commercially sold usage rights", etc.: sort of. If there is a written transfer of copyright, that can be sent to VRT. Anything less than that exposes legitimate reusers to an unacceptable risk. Consider the following scenario: you claim rights over a photo that "Photographer X" took. You upload to Commons and grant a license. "Magazine Y" uses the photo, conforming to your granted license. Photographer X threatens to sue Magazine Y for copyright infringement. Where does that leave them? - Jmabel ! talk 18:16, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo,

Hallo Werder Feinkost GmbH,
Request for trimming video

[edit]

Is there any template that is similar to {{Remove border}} (which redirects from {{Crop video}}) that will crop not the border around the edges of a video, but marks that a video should be trimmed at a certain point? I have a video that I'm uploading now with Video2Commons that has some acceptable material for the first 5:50 or so, but the last 2:20 or so has some copyrighted work and it needs to be removed. I'm not that great with video, so I can't do it myself. :/ Any guidance on where I can post this request once the video has been converted and uploaded? —Justin (koavf)TCM 12:14, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Said video just finished uploading: File:Eels (2013-04-25, Le Trianon, Paris, FR).webm. If someone could be kind enough to cut it off at 5:50-ish before they introduce the song at the end, that would be appreciated. Once that bit is gone, I'll embed it in Wikipedia. —Justin (koavf)TCM 13:15, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IDK if there's a template, but you could post a request at Commons:Graphic Lab/Video and sound workshop. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 14:00, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request to upload program from meeting of the Merrie England Club, at the House of Commons, 1931.

[edit]

Hello,

I have my grandfather's copy of the program for a meeting of the "Merrie England Club" in 1931. As such, I suspect this is in the common domain. As far as I know the club no longer exists. I don't know who one would ask for permission to post it; I doubt any of them are still alive. But I think this could be of historic interest as speakers at the event included: J. F. Shillaker, Esq., M.BE, M.P, Rt. Hon. ARTHUR GREENWOOD, P.C., M.P., Rev. HERBERT DUNNICO, J.P., P.C., M.P., FRED MONTAGUE Esq., M.P.

My intent is to share an image of the cover of this program on the "Merrie England" Wiki talk page. If there is interest and permission I will share images of the contents, and the signatures on the back. If there is interest, I suppose this could eventually find its way to the main wiki page.

Sincerely, Donald McLachlan DonMcL123 (talk) 17:49, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DonMcL123: Copyright rules differ by country; where was this program published/in what country did the meeting happen? —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 18:33, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DonMcL123: Unforunately, copyright can outlive organizations. If this was a 1931 UK photograph, it is possibly public domain in the UK if the photographer cannot be found with a reasonable search (web search is not enough), otherwise it's 70 years after the death of the photographer. In the United States, it won't be public domain until at least 2027. Abzeronow (talk) 19:54, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I presume "House of Commons" meant the UK House of Commons, especially with the reference to an "M.P.". - Jmabel ! talk 20:16, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi All,
Yes it is from the UK. As far as I can tell it is an etching / woodcut print on the program. It was printed by Baxter and Ewin, 7 Frith St, London. I could not find any current reference to that company. It is a program for a speaking event in the House of Commons in London. The cover has the usual where and when details. The inside left page is the menu. The inside right page is the list of speakers. On the back my grandfather collected signatures (presumably of) attendees. I would not expect something similar, like a theatre program, to be copyrighted more than 70 years. I am willing to share privately if it will help with a determination of copyright status. Credit for uploading photo

[edit]

Do you get credited for uploading photo? SloanBruce (talk) 23:13, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@SloanBruce: that question is a bit unclear. (1) The file page on Commons indicates what account uploaded it. (2) If you are the photographer and choose a license that requires that you be credited, you should be credited whenever the photo is used. (3) If you upload a photo that was created and licensed by someone else, then there is no requirement that reusers credit you for having uploaded it to Commons. (4) It is permissible to create one or more hidden user categories that apply to your uploads. (5) Your uploads (you have none, so far) will all be visible at Special:ListFiles/SloanBruce, which you can access from the "Unloads" link on the top nav (assuming you don't use some exotic skin that moves it elsewhere).
Does that answer your question, or did you mean something else? - Jmabel ! talk 23:40, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I'm trying to upload a file for our company logo. We are a deductible insurance company. What file and size should it be? I am the original designer for the logo and I'm employed by the company. Please advise. Is the Wikimedia Commons the right place to do so? Np3 1997 (talk) 21:01, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Np3 1997: Hi, On Commons, we only accept logos 1. if they are from a notable company, 2. if they are in the public domain or under a free license. So if your company is notable, please ask a legal representative to send a permission for a free license via COM:VRT. Alternatively, if the company has already an article on English Wikipedia, you can upload the logo there under a fair use rationale. Yann (talk) 21:51, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To add to Yann's answer:
  • Use an SVG file if you have it, but other types are fine if you don't.
  • Any size that's recognizable, preferrably clear, and not absurdly huge is fine.
In short, don't worry too much about file type and size. Also, if the logo consists of "simple geometric shapes or text", you can upload it under PD-textlogo without having to ask permission. Kaasterly (talk) 02:15, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since Wikmedia Commons doesn't have "articles" other than our own policies, guidelines, help pages etc, pretty much any article would be out of scope for Commons. Is there a chance that you are asking this question on the wrong website? - Jmabel ! talk 01:40, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If someone repeatedly creating empty categories for the same title, this counts as vandalism?

[edit]

As the deletion log shows:

  • 12:40, 1 July 2024 Billinghurst talk contribs deleted page Category:Kaohsiung Cingnian Night Market (empty categories per other deletion requests)
  • 16:28, 21 February 2024 Túrelio talk contribs deleted page Category:Kaohsiung Cingnian Night Market (CSD G1 (test page, accidental creation, or page containing nonsense or no valid content))
  • 17:12, 17 November 2023 Kadı talk contribs deleted page Category:Kaohsiung Cingnian Night Market (C2: Unuseful empty category) Tag: Adiutor

The page is always empty after creating and has been deleted three times, especially it has been deleted twice this year. It seems to have been created by someone who enjoys the empty category. If we create empty categories and keep them, what benefit does this bring to Commons? Or, what benefit does that have to the reader? If not, I think it will be better to protect "Category:Kaohsiung Cingnian Night Market" for a temporary time.--125.230.83.62 14:45, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

posting images made in Microsoft Word

[edit]

In support of educational material and scientific presenations I frequently make images in Microsoft Word, using their drawing functions (lines, arrows, boxes, icons). Can these be freely distributed and submitted to WikiMedia? Would be great. Not sure whether especially the icons would be protected by license or not. 131.155.77.83 16:44, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can submit images that you drew in MSWord to the Commons and freely distribute them. As to the built in icons, you can read here about their use. So, you can use them in your images and distribute these images but cannot distribute the icons themselves. Ruslik (talk) 20:39, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Anonimo3000000 (talk) 14:00, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Anonimo3000000: "has been used within the 150 or so years" doesn't make a lot of sense. with "has been used within the 150 or so years" i more specifically has been used recently enough to not be public domain.
the logo im trying to post is the logo for a now defunct italian pay tv channel called "RaiSat 2", its for the italian wikipedia page since it doesnt have the image, i might do the same with 1 and 3 if i can do it for 2, the logo was last used in 1999 before the channel was renamed to just "RaiSat Ragazzi", the division that managed these channels also has been shut down since 2010, the company that owned it is still around though Anonimo3000000 (talk) 01:42, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Anonimo3000000: It doesn't matter when they were last used; it may matter when they were first used.
Two things are going to matter: is the logo complex enough to be copyrighted and when was it first published. Given that the station was founded in 1997, I assume it cannot be older than that, and so if it was copyrightable it is presumably still copyrighted. Italy has an unusually short term of copyright (20 years) for government, academies, public bodies, and non-profit cultural organizations, but I assume from that name this had something to do with RAI, so it is none of those apply and it would get 70 years. Still, Italy also has an unusually high threshold of originality for copyright. Can you link a page that shows the logo, so someone can judge its level of complexity?
Also, in the future, complicated copyright questions are better asked at Commons:Village pump/Copyright than on the general help desk. - Jmabel ! talk 02:07, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
yes it has to do with rai in fact it was one of their multiple pay tv channels

alternate logo https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/File:20180304_153128.jpg Anonimo3000000 (talk) 10:53, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Anonimo3000000: I think that hand puts it over the threshold of originality even for Italy, so it's presumably copyrighted. We can't have it on Commons without a license from RAI, which they are very unlikely to grant. It looks like if you want to use it in the it-wiki article, you can upload it directly to it-wiki, with certain conditions. @Bigben1979: It normally means that when accounts were unified across the WMF wikis 15 or so years ago, someone didn't resolve a name conflict in a timely manner, so this was added to remove ambiguity. Of course, there is nothing stopping someone from just using it in an account name separately from that, but that's vanishingly rare. - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading photograph from IMDb

Hello,

I'm updating the page of Cara DeLizia and I want to upload a picture of her. Can I use her IMDb photograph?

Best regards. PyroOnFire (talk) 21:02, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, IMDB is not freely licensed, and we only would accept freely licensed photographs of actresses post-1989. Please read COM:L Abzeronow (talk) 21:11, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Abzeronow, I am curious where you found the "1989" cutoff year, because it is not in COM:L and seems quite arbitrary when copyright tends to rest on the date of death of the author/creator of a work. Does a 1989 cutoff apply to all countries, or one in particular, such as the US for the specific case of DeLizia and IMDb (Amazon)? Elizium23 (talk) 21:54, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was a question about an American actress and an American site, so yes, I was just discussing American copyright law in such all photographs (except for U.S. federal government works) are presumed to be copyrighted if published after March 1989. Of course, many American photographs from 1929 to 1989 are still copyrighted too, but because of formalities in copyright law in that period, research has to be done to determine copyright status. As you say, works from outside the U.S. would have different copyright rules, and life of the author plus 70 years is generally the rule of thumb but there are exceptions for simple photographs in some countries. Abzeronow (talk) 03:09, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Elizium23: We use the 1 March 1989 date because that's when the US joined the Berne Convention per COM:US.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:01, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Licensing: Is asking the creator enough?

[edit]

Hello! A 3D artist, or an organization affiliated with them, has released slideshows with their art under CC-BY-SA before. I seek to use a work by them on Wikipedia, but this particular work, also from said organization, is from a different slideshow which doesn't say which license it's released under. This is probably an oversight; if I e-mail the organization and confirm it's released under said license, would that be enough to add it to the Commons, or does it require public proof? Kaasterly (talk) 00:00, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kaasterly: Public proof or email to the VRT is required. The simplest thing is if they would indicate the license on the relevant source page; second best would be if they would indicate it on some other public-facing page clearly under their control and referencing the source page (which you can cite in the "permission" section of {{Information}} when uploading); third best would be for them to go through the VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 02:11, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- Jmabel ! talk 04:29, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I upload an image found on a site creativecommons.org?

[edit]

Hello, I am looking for a comic image to illustrate the article 'Lobo DC Comics' and I found a comic photo here: https://openverse.org/image/b080cf6d-48ee-4bd6-8c32-5a53a90ff514?q=lobo%20comics through this site: creativecommons.org. I see that on the site it is specified: "This image was marked with a CC BY 2.0 license: Credit the creator." And that's exactly what I'm going to do by using it for the article. Do I have the right to do so? Thank you very much.

Здравствуйте, увидела фотография, но фотографии копия я, даже взгляд мой. Но фотография была сделана 1966 г. Я родилась в 1984 г. Anyone have an easy guide for that? Trade (talk) 14:46, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Trade: it's almost too simple for a guide. Download the full resolution version of the photo. Open it in GIMP (or another image editor, but that one is free and powerful). Select the portion to be blurred, by whatever selection tool is most convenient. Select Filter | Blur | Gaussian blur... from the menu. Increase "Size X" until it looks sufficiently blurred ("Size Y" should also change unless you actively delink them). Save. Upload as an overwrite.

I figured it out. Unfortunately the default level of Gaussian blur is not enough to hide copyrighted elements. Could you tell me how to turn it up without having to redo the lines all over againTrade (talk) 21:59, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is this Gaussian blurring intended as a courtesy to simply prevent innocent people from seeing a copyrighted image, or is it intended to prevent distribution of that copyrighted image by sites such as Commons? Because we should be mindful of the effects of en:Deconvolution and the ability to, perhaps with favorable circumstances, reconstruct whatever you've chosen to blur.
Perhaps a better choice would be simple erasure. Just black out the offending portions of the image, erase them completely, take them out of the equation. Then, you won't leave any opportunity for reconstruction. Elizium23 (talk) 00:37, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We usually use a Gaussian blur for this purpose. It's pretty effective if done at a high enough level of blur (the default is a very slight blur, the user has to increase the area used in blurring from 1.5 pixels to usually 15 or more (Trade: you might want to look at the GIMP manual online for how to do that), even higher for a large portion of a high-res image). The advantage to a Gaussian blur over erasure is that it leaves the scene looking pretty "normal" at low-res but only very little more legible (or even less so) at high-res so it doesn't produce a "useful" copy of the copyrighted material. See File:Albanian President Bajram Begaj hosts Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau, for a meeting at the Office of the President in Tirana, Albania on June 8, 2023 - 2.jpg for a good example.
I think the issue of deconvolution is a red herring. This overwhelmingly arises for third-party images where we always link back to the source image, so the full, infringing version could be found in any case. It's not about making that impossible to see/find/recreate, it's about keeping the would-be infringement de minimis. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking Guidance on Uploading a Key Artwork for Lobo (DC Comics) to Comply with Non-Free Content Policy

[edit]

Hello, I am planning to upload an image of the original painting for "Lobo #1" from 1990 by Simon Bisley to enhance the related article. Before proceeding, I want to ensure that my approach complies with Wikipedia's non-free content policy. Here's my plan:

  1. Justification: The image showcases Simon Bisley's distinctive style that significantly transformed Lobo’s visual representation and popularity.
  2. Educational Purpose: I aim to use the image for critical commentary on the artistic evolution of the character Lobo, demonstrating Bisley's impact on comic book artistry.
  3. Copyright Info: The image is copyrighted by DC Comics, published in 1990. I intend to use it in low resolution to comply with fair use, discussing its significance in an educational context.
  4. Relevance: The image is crucial for the readers to understand the specific aesthetic and cultural shift in the character portrayal introduced by Bisley.

Additionally, I have resized the original image to a resolution of 300x453 pixels to further comply with fair use guidelines. (300x 453 px). My primary motivation is to present the most relevant and popular portrayal of Lobo. Could you please confirm if this approach is in line with the guidelines or suggest any modifications needed?

Thank you! Ketzalcoat (talk) 13:36, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I know it's a silly issue, but I accidentally deleted the automatic reversion comment on the latest version of File:Coldplay Glasto24 290624 (73) (53837901483) (cropped).jpg. Is there any way I can solve this? It feels wrong having an empty field. GustavoCza (talk) 19:02, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries are immutable, and unless an oversighter redacts them, they will remain as-is. If you really need to place a comment in the article history, you can make some sort of inconsequential edit ("null edit") and supply the edit summary at that point. But typically, I would not recommend this. You could always place a comment on the File talk page, or some other appropriate talk page, as a more normal discussion. Multiple users needing help

[edit]

User:Commander Keane recently brought it to my attention that no one seems to be monitoring Category:User needing help. I took care of a few, but there is more there than I wish to take on right now. If anyone can help some of these users, great. Remember to mark the "Helpme" template with a {{Tl}} when the issue is sorted out, or if you have begun a dialogue and will be watching the page and taking care of the issue moving forward. When you do that to the template, you effectively remove the category so that no one else is redundantly drawn to the page. - Jmabel ! talk 04:25, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to add: some of these issues have been "hanging" for a very long time. - Jmabel ! talk 04:27, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
