Wikisource[edit]

I've never used Wikisource - could you explain how to do that? Durova 02:26, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. It will be easier to explain if you jump onto #wikisource or register on English Wikisource so I can help you via your talk page there. Anyhow, there are two parts. If you have the Spanish text, and feel confident navigating around a Spanish project, you should look to see if it already exists using es:s:Special:Search (I couldnt find it), and if it isnt there, add the text of the law at an indicative page name, like es:s:Ley sobre el Derecho de Autor, 1977. Then on the English project, create en:s:Cuban Copyright Law, 1997, and put in any translation snippets you have created. Our team at Wikisource will clean up anything after you ;-) John Vandenberg 07:07, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey,

I just created this page which I think could be somewhat related to Wikisource (but not encroaching on its territory, I think, instead a good bridge between). If you know of some similar galleries please link them up there. cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:30, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

John Vandenberg, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to Commons:List_of_administrators and the related lists by language and date it references...

Every best wish for your success here. If you have any questions you have but to ask, you know where to find any of us. Please add yourself by hand to the "other projects" list: Commons:List of administrators by adminship status in other Wikimedia projects ++Lar: t/c 16:16, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats Jay! Lar is the one that promoted me to admin here on Commons too. RlevseTalk 19:18, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures[edit]

I'm really not interested in participating in the editing of the article. The last picture you had up was entirely unacceptable it is my ID and I've had problems with identity theft. I submitted two other photos that I do have ownership. I also have the rights to the photo of me standing on college walk. The fact that the editors some how found reason to take out that photo because it's "too positive" shows how silly and childish the process has become. Matt Sanchez

The picture was removed from English Wikipedia because its copyright status is in doubt. If we can sort out the copyright the image will be restored. Thank you for contributing more images. The more the merrier! John Vandenberg (chat) 06:57, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The image wall of shame was removed because of the hostility of the childish editorial staff. There are several misrepresentations in the article Matt Sanchez. I am not an "embedded blogger" and the source indicated for that name says nothing of being an embedded blogger. Bluemarine 10:32, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The wall of shame image was deleted because the images on the poster are not free. Nobody is claiming that it is not your photo - it is the images within the photo that are not free. John Vandenberg (chat) 10:54, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've also uploaded several more images, but for some reason wiki commons wants to delete them. Please advise. Bluemarine 10:32, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Each image added to Commons needs to be accompanied with date/source/author; without those details, they are removed automatically from the project. Image:MattInParis4.jpg is not created by you, so it is extremely unlikely that you have the right to upload it to the Commons project; we only accept images that are 100% known to be free of all limitations by the owners of the image. John Vandenberg (chat) 10:54, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Still, no explanation why this image was deleted from the article itself.Bluemarine 10:47, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Durova has placed the image back onto Wikipedia, by claiming "fair-use". This may result in a dispute, not because it is your image, but because Wikipedia tries to avoid "fair-use" whenever possible. John Vandenberg (chat) 10:54, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The U.S. federal government can include it in its files, and release it to the public as part of its files, but I'm pretty sure that the copyright would belong to George H.W. Bush individually... AnonMoos 10:44, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He wrote it on a US Gov letterhead, which by default means it was conducted as part of his role as part of the US federal government. Presumably it was also dictated or drafted by his staff, and typed up using more federal resources. I'd be interested in any USC or case law that contradicts this type of personal letter not being considered a work of the federal government. John Vandenberg (chat) 12:38, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A Congressman is not really a federal government "employee" in any ordinary or usual sense, and it was effectively a personal letter anyway. AnonMoos 18:12, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Congress are part of the "government". See w:Copyright status of work by the U.S. government and s:United States Code/Title 17/Chapter 1/Sections 105 and 106. Typically, a personal letter is put on personal letterhead. As I said, I am interested in reading any material that you have to underpin your belief that this is not a work of the US govt.
