Minbar decorations - Spain (Cordoba) - 1137 - Louvre - 74.1969.5.1-5.jpg

Bonjour @Robert Prazeres: vous avez supprimé la catégorie El Badi Palace pour ce fichier. Le minbar dont ces éléments proviennent est actuellement au El Badi Palace. Merci pour la question; j'ai supprimé la catégorie dans ce cas seulement parce que ces fragments sont au Louvre (en revanche, il y a maintenant des photos du minbar lui-même au Palais Badi), mais aussi parce que cette photo et tous les photos du minbar sont dans la catégorie "Koutoubia Minbar", et celle-ci est catégorisé correctement dans "El Badi Palace", "Koutoubia Mosque", etc. Donc les utilisateurs devraient être capables de retrouver les photos facilement en suivant le principe de modularité (voir: Commons:Categories#Category_structure_in_Wikimedia_Commons). chandelier aux canards

Rebonjour, ayant constaté votre intérêt pour l'Egypte sur votre page utilisateur, auriez-vous par hasard une photo d'un chandelier "aux canards" qui se trouve au musée d'art islamique du Caire et qui serait la copie conforme de celui qui est au Louvre ? J'ai cherché dans mes photos mais malheureusement je n'ai rien trouvé d'un chandelier semblable. Ayant exploré le musée à fond, je ne crois pas que l'aurais manqué, mais toujours possible qu'il est dans la collection du musée mais pas en exposition. Yeah I was trying out the transfer process from Wikipedia to Commons for the first time so I may have missed it. I proceeded under the assumption that Dustinroyer was the author and had already provided permission when they uploaded the file and specified a CC license (as per the history there), but if I'm wrong then indeed I can't help further. You're welcome. Just to remind you, if you open category of any particular hammam, lets say Jarchi Hammam, there's always an infobox with many details, and if you open it's Wikidata item, you'll see that every such detail is referenced. Now Commons is stronger than English Wikipedia (see this pity article with incorrect data: en:Jarchi hammam). :) After this fact-checking is done, it's quite easy to make or expand existing wiki articles. Image use

Hello, I noticed several images I uploaded related to architecture were nominated for deletion due to copyright. I believe I may have misunderstood the Wikipedia rules for image use especially the public domain section. I would greatly appreciate if you would be able to give a brief example or explanation for finding a picture that I can use without violating Wikipedia rules, for example I recently created a page for a dish called Mchawcha and there are no photos for it on commons. I am currently interested in contributing to pages or creating pages related to Algerian cuisine which would involve images that are not available on commons and I would like to upload images without violating any Wikipedia rules.

Hi Kabz15. A quick summary of what you can upload can be found on this page. Basically, the important thing to remember is that most of the images you can find on the internet or in books are protected by copyright, even when it's not explicitly stated. Every image was created by somebody, and that person (or group/organisation) owns the copyright to that image by law, unless they clearly say otherwise.

I didn't review all of your uploads (I mostly reviewed those that came from sources I recognized), but I noticed that many of the more recent images you uploaded of kaftans and other clothing were also taken from the internet. Those images should therefore most likely be deleted as well.

If helpful, here are some other quick points to keep in mind:

• Photographs of copyrighted content, such as artwork or creative productions of any kind, is also protected and can't be uploaded, even if you took the photograph. The exception to this of course is artwork that is old enough that its copyright has expired and is now in the public domain. You can find more details about this and about copyright rules at this page (and this page might be useful too). Remember that if the picture is in the public domain but you didn't create it yourself, you must still provide the source and the original author, otherwise it will falsely show that you are the author. You can add this information during the upload process.
• Some images on the internet are licensed by the author in a way that they are free to reuse and modify. You can read about this at this page. Those pictures can be uploaded to Wiki Commons, but you have to be sure that they are properly licensed. If you're unsure about a picture's license, assume it's not compatible for upload here. One place you can look for this is on Flickr, for example. There you can search for pictures and you can restrict your search to show only "Commercial use & mods allowed" pictures, which are usually compatible for upload on Wiki Commons. Read through this page for more information about that and make sure you understand the rules before doing this. If you're interested in uploading pictures from Flickr, you can also consider using the Flickr2Commons tool: it takes a bit of time to learn and get used to it, but once you do it can be very helpful.

There are lots of subjects on Wikimedia for which there are no pictures or no good pictures available on Commons. That's just the way it is. Unless you have your own pictures to upload, there's usually not much you can do about it for now. You have to wait until someone comes along and shares their own pictures freely. You can still contribute to Wikipedia articles about those topics, but you have to accept that there aren't always helpful pictures available to add.

Thanks for the reply, although I am still a bit confused this was helpful and informative. I will also take a look at Flickr thanks for the tip. One last question: if an image on a museum website provides the name of the author of the photo and/or the publication for instance here would it be ok to upload?

I'm glad it was a little helpful. To answer your question for that example: no it's not ok to upload, because copyright belongs to the author of the photo. Unless there's something there that clearly says the picture is available for reuse under an appropriate Creative Commons license (the type of license Wikimedia uses that allows for reuse and modification by other users), all rights are reserved for the author. Even if it's a picture of an ancient object, the picture itself is considered the creative work of the photographer, so it belongs to him/her. (And of course, if there's no author identified, it's still copyright-protected; it's up to you (as the uploader) to have proof that the picture is available under the appropriate license or in the public domain.) PS: I noticed that for this example from the museum, there's a link to inquire about reusing/reproducing the picture (where it says "Pour toute demande de reproduction veuillez contacter la photothèque.") That usually implies that the museum could agree to let an author use the picture for a particular academic or educational book, for example, but it's unlikely (though not impossible) that they would agree to release the picture under a less restrictive license, which is what would be necessary for use on Wikipedia/Wiki Commons. Move option

Dear Wikimedian, I often come across your work. Today I saw you wrote texts implying the pictures like File:Church of St. George - 3rd Century AD - Diyarbakir - Turkey - 04 (5780927420).jpg had a wrong name. I came to the same conclusion and asked for the names to be renamed. I wondered if you are aware of that renaming option. If you are you can stop reading. But maybe you’re not. On my screen there are "Options" to the right of a line under a picture's name, and one of those options is "Move". That starts a procedure where an edit is made that asks a file mover to rename a picture. I unfortunately make many typos myself and often use it to change my own errors. As the "original uploader" I fill in 1 at option 2 and usually the correction is made within a day. I think option 3, for “obvious errors” takes some controlling, but at least the request to change the name is obvious to viewers in a panel that appears under the picture. There are so many errors in Commons that it is well worth the trouble. Dosseman (talk) 13:31, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
